About Me: James C. Burchill — Bestselling Author, Instructor & Technologist
Introduction
Hi there, I’m James C. Burchill. Born in England, UK and now calling Burlington, Ontario, [Canada] home, I’m a blend of a tech enthusiast, published author, and entrepreneur with over 35 years of experience in software development and business. I’ve seen trends rise and fall, and I’ve always kept one foot ahead — sometimes to my delight and occasionally to my frustration.
If you’re curious about how someone can juggle software engineering, a passion for cooking, riding motorcycles, and helping others use technology to create the lives they want, keep reading.
“The two most important days in your life are …
the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
Why I Started Writing
Writing wasn’t my first calling — it was problem-solving.
As a kid tinkering with my ZX80, I found a joy in creating software solutions. Writing eventually became a natural extension of that, allowing me to share my thoughts with others.
Plus, it forced me to organize my thinking!
Producer anyone?
But let’s be real: the journey hasn’t been without its twists and turns. I’ve published information products and courses, sold consulting, and even hosted a weekly TV show called Smartcar Coffee Confidential. Producing a weekly TV is a lot of work — but so much fun! My show aired on local TV multiple times weekly for over 3 years.
Here’s the trailer.
The things we do for our ‘art’ — I had a “little” accident while filming an episode of the TV show 🚨
Teacher, too?
As a University professor, I’ve also taught marketing, social media, computer science, and a few other topics. “Professor James” had a nice ring; I was just not a fan of all the exam marking!
And while some ventures thrived, others didn’t. Yet, every experience taught me something invaluable.
These days, I write to share what I’ve learned about leveraging technology — not just the latest trends but practical tools that save time and make life easier.
“My goal is to help people use tech to free up time, increase income, and build the lifestyle they’ve always wanted.”
Success Doesn’t Happen Overnight
It took me a long time to realize that success is less about the sprint and more about the marathon. I used to get excited about new ideas, only to abandon them when they didn’t take off quickly. Seeing those same ideas succeed in someone else’s hands? Infuriating. But that frustration became my greatest teacher — showing me the importance of persistence.
From leading a team through a major system rebuild after a cyberattack to developing best-selling books and online courses for solopreneurs, I’ve learned to stay the course. These experiences have reinforced my belief that success is built one brick at a time, even if the blueprint changes along the way.
Social Fusion Networking
Speaking of changing blueprints, I also built a local b2b networking organization circa 2011–2019, which took the typical [outdated] approach and flipped it on its head. Another one of my, “Sure, I’ll do that. After all, how hard could this really be?” Uhuh …
Here’s a photo of me addressing 700+ local businesses attending my bi-annual small business tradeshow. Again, it is super fun to produce and promote but highly time-consuming.
Some Random Facts About Me
- My favourite quote? “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why.”
- My favourite drink? A double vodka on the rocks with a lemon twist, two olives, and a water back. [An ice-cold beer is a close second!]
- I’m a fan of intelligent, creative problem-solving but have little patience for small thinkers or incessant chatter.
- I love cooking — there’s something deeply satisfying about creating something from scratch and sharing it with others.
- In 2024, I crossed an item off my bucket list and got my dream motorcycle: a brand-new Honda Goldwing DCT.
- I’m actively involved with the Southern Cruisers Riding Club (SCRC) in my hometown, where I enjoy connecting with others who share a love for the open road.
- In my 20s, I trained to be a stunt-man. Yup, a “fall guy.” I continued my training briefly after moving to Canada in 1994, but family commitments altered that career course!
- Finally, despite my professional persona, I value kindness above all else — though I’m learning to say “no” more often to protect my peace.
Where I’m Headed Next
Right now, I’m enjoying my role as VP of Software Engineering for SHIFT4, where I have the privilege of leading talented teams and supporting innovative projects. At the same time, I’m exploring ways to blend my passions for technology and entrepreneurship to help solopreneurs and small business owners use practical tools to save time, make more money, and design the life they want.
For me, the dream isn’t just financial freedom — it’s time freedom. I want to create a life where I can enjoy simple things, from a quiet evening with my favourite drink to the thrill of seeing someone succeed with the advice I share.
A Final Thought
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life is a puzzle, and every piece — no matter how frustrating or seemingly useless — has its place. Whether it’s a childhood of modest means, the challenges of leadership, or the joy of riding a Goldwing on a sunny day, it all adds up to something meaningful.
So here’s to the next chapter. If you’re reading this, thanks for being part of the story. Let’s see where the journey takes us.
Cheers,
James Burchill
